Hemlock Archery
Shaft Stain
Hemlock Shaft Stain is a high-quality, pigment-rich stain developed specifically for colouring wooden arrow shafts with excellent coverage and minimal coats. Made for serious archers and traditional craftsmen, it offers a rich, even tone while helping to protect the wood beneath.
Hemlock Shaft Stain – Detailed Application Guide
Before You Start:
To achieve the best results, ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area with stable conditions — ideally around 21°C and humidity below 60%. Avoid working in overly cold, hot, or damp environments, as this will affect drying and finish quality.
🧼 Step 1 – Surface Prep
-
Ensure the shaft is clean, bare wood — no previous finish, wax, or sealant.
-
DO NOT seal the shaft before staining. The stain must absorb directly into the timber to bond effectively.
-
Lightly hand-sand the shaft using 150-240 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.
-
Using white spirits, clean the shaft - removing any dust, wax or oils.
🎨 Step 2 – Apply the First Coat
-
Shake the stain thoroughly before use to ensure pigments are evenly distributed.
-
Using a clean lint-free cloth, apply a thin, even coat of stain in the direction of the grain.
-
Wipe off any excess to avoid streaking or pooling.
-
Allow to dry for 30–60 minutes before handling.
⏱️ Step 3 – Second Coat (Optional but Recommended)
-
For deeper colour and a smoother, more even finish, apply a second coat after 1–2 hours of drying time.
-
For lighter shades such as yellow, orange and white, a third coat may be necessary for full opacity.
-
Gently abrade between coats with a scouring pad, then wipe the shaft clean with damp cloth.
🧪 Step 4 – Curing
-
Once the final coat is applied, allow the arrows to fully cure for at least 16 hours in stable drying conditions before sealing or use (ideally 19–22°C with humidity below 60%).
-
Avoid handling during the cure period to prevent fingerprints or uneven finish.
💧 Step 5 – Sealing (Highly Recommended)
Although Hemlock Shaft Stain contains good waterproofing properties, we strongly recommend sealing your shafts for long-term protection.
-
Use 1–2 coats of a Hemlock Shaft Sealer or another high-quality water-based varnish once the stain is fully cured.
-
Allow the varnish to dry and cure completely according to its instructions before shooting.
⚠️ Additional Tips & Safety
-
Keep out of reach of children.
-
Non-hazardous, but contact with eyes should be rinsed immediately with warm water.
-
Clean tools and containers with warm, soapy water before the stain dries.
-
Do not dispose of in drains or watercourses.
-
Store stain in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or frost.
